A charge controller or charge regulator is basically a voltage and or current regulator to keep batteries from overcharging. It regulates the voltage and current coming from the Solar Panels going to the batteries. Charge controllers stop charging a battery when they exceed a set high voltage level, and re-enable charging when the battery voltage drops back below that level.

Charge controller may also monitor battery temperature to prevent overheating. Some charge controller systems also display data, transmit data to remote displays and data logging to track electric flow over time. It also ensures that power does not run backwards to the solar panels overnight and drain the batteries.

The main role of a Charge Controller is to protect and automate the charging of the battery. It does this in several ways-:
• Reducing the voltage of your Solar Panel
• Monitoring the voltage of your battery
• Stopping reverse current at night preventing damage to your solar charging kits.
